“In EMPHATIC LISTENING, you listen with your eyes and your heart. You listen for feelings, for meaning. You listen for behavior. You use your right brain as well as your left. You sense, you intuit, you feel. Empathetic listening is powerful because it gives you accurate data to deal with.”  Steven Covey Daily Reflections for Highly Effective People.

I’m sure you have heard it before, however listening truly is a very important skill. It also is a very difficult skill for a lot of people to master.  Our egos are too strong and want to take over and express our knowledge or skill or take control. Talking is the egos way of showing off.  However,  to me, listening to understand or as the above quote says ’empathetic listening’ is you controlling yourself and being truly present.  It is hard.  Next time you are in a conversation with someone truly try to focus on listening for feelings, meaning and sense what you feel instead of your mind thinking about what you are going to say next.

Listening is a sign of respect, it takes power to let others go first and express their point of view.  Your perspective on your relationships and the world will change when you take a step back and talk less than you listen.  Those who know when to remain quiet often enjoy more fulfilling relationships.
